ACCIONA

ACCIONA is one of Spain’s leading infrastructure and renewable energy companies and a member of the IBEX 35 index. Operating in more than 60 countries, the company is committed to driving sustainable economic, environmental, and social development through innovative solutions in energy, infrastructure, water, and services.

ACCIONA is involved in designing, manufacturing and operating advanced water treatment facilities aimed at ensuring sustainable management and availability of water resources worldwide. The company is at the forefront of applying innovative technologies to promote circularity in the water sector, with a particular focus on recovering valuable resources from wastewater and seawater. Today, ACCIONA Water is a global leader in water treatment, processing more than 1,100 hm³ of water annually. Its activities cover the entire water cycle, including drinking water treatment, desalination, wastewater treatment, water reuse, and integrated water management services.

ACCIONA is actively involved in projects focused on CO₂ capture and valorisation as a pathway to reduce the carbon footprint of wastewater treatment plants while increasing their circularity. Examples include the BIOUP project, aimed at converting captured CO₂ into renewable methane, and the HICCUPS project, which explores the production of bioplastics from recovered carbon streams.

ACCIONA also maintains a strong commitment to water reuse and resource recovery. The company has developed and operated several pioneering water reclamation schemes, including the Arroyo Culebro Cuenca Media-Alta wastewater treatment plant in Spain, which supplies reclaimed water to a neighbouring industrial facility, as well as large-scale water reuse initiatives in the Region of Murcia, where more than 97% of treated wastewater is reused.

To support these activities, ACCIONA has participated in numerous research and innovation projects focused on advanced water treatment technologies. These include the INTEGROIL project, dedicated to water reuse solutions for the oil and gas sector, and the LIFE PRISTINE project, which validates advanced treatment technologies capable of removing contaminants of emerging concern that are not eliminated through conventional wastewater treatment processes.

In addition, ACCIONA benefits from a close collaboration with its sister company, ACCIONA Energía, a global leader in renewable energy generation. This strong connection between water management, resource recovery, and renewable energy provides a unique foundation for achieving the objectives of COMECOCO2 and accelerating the deployment of sustainable Power-to-X solutions.

Within the COMECOCO2 project, ACCIONA contributes its expertise in wastewater treatment, biogas generation, and resource recovery, helping to assess and demonstrate how innovative Power-to-X technologies can be integrated into real wastewater treatment infrastructures to convert biogenic CO₂ into sustainable fuels and chemicals.
